Loose-Leaf Tea 101: Scoop, Steep, Sip

Loose-leaf tea can look intimidating if you are used to dropping a bag into a mug, but the process is wonderfully simple. A few basics are enough to make a beautiful cup.

1. Scoop

Start with the preparation directions on your tea package. Different blends contain leaves, flowers, roots, fruits, seeds, and spices of different sizes and densities, so one universal measurement does not fit every formula.

A roomy infuser or tea basket is helpful because it gives the botanicals space to move as they steep.

2. Add water

Use fresh water and follow the temperature guidance on the blend. Herbal teas are commonly prepared with very hot water, but your package directions should always be your first reference.

3. Steep

Give the botanicals the full recommended steep time. Under-steeping can leave a cup thin; steeping longer changes intensity and can bring forward more bitter, spicy, or earthy notes depending on the ingredients.

4. Strain

Remove the infuser or strain the herbs completely. Then taste before adding anything. You may love the blend exactly as it is, or you may prefer a little honey or another favorite sweetener.

5. Sip

This is the part we care about most. Put the phone down for a minute. Notice the steam, aroma, warmth, and flavor. Let preparing tea become something more than hydration or habit.

Storing loose-leaf tea

Keep your tea sealed, dry, and away from direct light, excessive heat, moisture, and strong odors. Always use a clean, dry utensil when scooping from the package.
